Indie Biz Academy started in 2016 as a weekly meet-up of makers and retailers. We meet each Monday to discuss issues that we face and to help celebrate each others' successes. It's part skill share, part crowd-sourced consultation and sometimes the meeting is a small biz support group ;)
In 2019 we expanded the meet-ups to include a once per month workshop. We poll the group to find out where we have holes in our shared knowledge and then invite an expert to talk to us about their area of specialized knowledge.
In the winter we hold a two-day intensive conference with the goal of setting ourselves up to be organized and intentional in the year to come.
What We Do
10/21/2019: Strategic Marketing: Decision Making for Expanding Product Lines
With finite time and money, it’s important to prioritize. In this workshop we explored tools that businesses of all sizes use to guide their decision making. We reviewed frameworks helpful for growth planning, product analysis, and audience targeting. We worked together in small groups to apply these frameworks to our individual businesses.
10/7/2019: Photoshop for Product Photography
Ali of 9000Things walked the group through basic filter and color correction techniques to make products stand out. We discussed the difference between photos that showcase your items for online stores and social media campaigns. Participants brought their own laptops and left with edited files ready to go.
7/29/2019: Crowdsourcing Wholesale & Hot Noods Dinner Discussion
As a group we brainstormed & researched retail stores to approach with our products. We developed approach strategies & some straw-man email templates. We heard pro-tips from retailers who buy wholesale. We created a database/resource folder together as a central resource for those who participated. After, we enjoyed dinner on the patio at the final night of the Hot Noods Pop-Up by Nightshade Restaurant.
6/24/2019: Photo Shoot - Wearables (With Models)
Photographer Helen Makadia joined us for a half day and took photos of participant's handmade wearables for editorial content. We hired three models and participants styled them with their products during the shoot.

6/3/2019: Strategic Marketing for Indie Brands
In this workshop, we learned some of the basic tools and processes that marketing professionals use to identify, target and engage consumers. We practiced using frameworks to lay the groundwork for a successful campaigns so that we could make informed decisions around ad spends and marketing expenses.
